Summer Fitness Activities to Keep Your Kids Active and Healthy

As the summer season approaches, it’s the perfect time to get your kids engaged in fitness activities like crossfit kids, that will keep them active and healthy. From young children to teenagers, there are various options to suit different age groups and interests. In this blog, we’ll explore summer fitness activities for different age ranges, ensuring that your kids stay active, have fun, and develop essential physical skills

Age appropriate activities

  1. Skip, Hop, and Jump (3-6 years):
For younger kids aged three to six, it’s important to focus on activities that are fun and promote the development of motor skills. Skipping, hopping, and jumping exercises can be introduced through games and challenges. Set up a mini obstacle course in your backyard or local park, incorporating activities like climbing, balancing, and jumping. Additionally, swimming lessons provide an excellent opportunity for water-based fitness, helping children become confident in the water while building strength and coordination.
  2. Team Sports and Individual Activities (6-12 years):
As children grow older, they may develop individual interests and preferences. Encourage them to explore team sports like basketball, soccer, or volleyball if they enjoy healthy competition and working with others. Alternatively, if they prefer individual activities, options like dancing, running, or track and field exercises can be pursued. It’s essential to guide them towards activities that suit their abilities and personality, promoting their self-esteem and critical thinking skills.
  3. Organized Sports (Teens):
For teenagers, summer provides an opportunity to work on conditioning and skill development for high school sports. Many schools offer sports exploration camps where teens can discover their interests and talents in different sports. Swimming programs such as junior lifeguard training not only enhance cardiovascular fitness but also teach lifesaving skills. Cycling and hiking are great options for teens who prefer outdoor adventures while getting a healthy dose of cardio.

Home Sports Day

As we suggested in our previous blog in this series How to keep your kids active in the summer, we said a home sports day is a great activity. Here are some age-appropriate games you can incorporate into a home sports day for different age groups:

  1. 3-6 years:
  • Egg and Spoon Race: Set up a designated course in your backyard and have kids balance an egg on a spoon while racing to the finish line.
  • Bean Bag Toss: Create targets using buckets or hula hoops and have children take turns throwing bean bags to score points.
  • Mini Obstacle Course: Set up a series of small obstacles like cones to crawl under, stepping stones to hop on, and a mini balance beam to cross.
  1. 6-12 years:
  • Three-Legged Race: Pair up kids and have them tie one leg to their partner’s leg. They must work together to race to the finish line.
  • Tug-of-War: Divide children into two teams and have them engage in a friendly tug-of-war competition using a rope.
  • Relay Races: Set up relay stations where each team member completes a specific task, such as running, hopping, or carrying an object before passing the baton to the next teammate.
  1. Teens:
  • Capture the Flag: Divide teens into two teams and set up designated territories for each team. The objective is to capture the other team’s flag without getting caught.
  • Basketball Shootout: Set up a basketball hoop and have teens take turns shooting from different distances. Keep track of points to determine the winner.
  • Fitness Circuit: Create a circuit of fitness stations with activities like push-ups, squats, burpees, and jumping jacks. Each teen rotates through the stations for a set amount of time.

Remember to adapt the games based on the available space and resources in your back garden. Safety should be a priority, so provide clear instructions, supervise the activities, and ensure proper warm-up and cool-down sessions. These age-appropriate games will add excitement and friendly competition to your home sports day, keeping everyone active and engaged.
