If you’ve been training with us for a while at CrossFit Shrewsbury, you may have noticed that our workouts feel a little different right now. Some days you’ll leave with a burning set of legs after a long workout, and other days you’ll be celebrating new personal records on lifts you’ve been working towards for months.
That’s not by accident—it’s part of the constantly varied structure of CrossFit.
CrossFit is defined as constantly varied functional movement performed at high intensity. The “constantly varied” part is what makes our workouts fun and well-rounded. It keeps your body guessing, challenges your fitness from every angle, and stops boredom from creeping in.
But let’s clear something up: constantly varied does not mean random. Every block of training at CrossFit Shrewsbury is built with a purpose. Whether you’re in our individual design (ID) program or part of our group classes, your training is carefully tailored so you get the right balance of strength, conditioning, and skill work.
What We’ve Been Focusing On Recently
Over late summer and into autumn, our group program at CrossFit Shrewsbury put a strong emphasis on building strength and improving skills. That meant more structured lifting sessions, chances to polish technique, and plenty of aerobic and interval work to keep fitness levels high.
The results spoke for themselves. Our PR (personal record) board was full of new achievements—squats going up, deadlifts feeling smoother, and gymnastic skills finally clicking. At the same time, those sessions built a powerful foundation for what comes next.
What’s Changing Now?
As we move into winter, you’ll notice more focus on longer metabolic conditioning workouts—what many in the CrossFit world call “METCONs.”
These workouts are designed to test your endurance, build your mental toughness, and help you move fast while staying efficient. They’re also a brilliant way to lift your energy through the darker months. There’s nothing like finishing a tough METCON surrounded by your teammates, high-fiving, and laughing about the madness you just pushed through together.
Some of these workouts will also prepare us for the CrossFit Open, an annual worldwide competition that many of our members enjoy testing themselves in. Others are simply about keeping training fresh, fun, and effective.
And for those of you already looking ahead to next summer, yes—this kind of conditioning work will help you feel fitter and stronger for the beach, the mountains, or whatever adventures you’ve got planned.
Don’t Worry—Strength Training Isn’t Going Anywhere
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that when conditioning ramps up, strength training disappears. At CrossFit Shrewsbury, that’s never the case.
Strength is the foundation of fitness. It’s what makes you better at running, cycling, swimming, or simply chasing your kids around the park. When you’re stronger, you move better, with less chance of injury, and you can push harder in every other area of training.
So while you’ll see more METCONs on the board, you’ll still squat, press, pull, and lift heavy. That balance is what makes CrossFit such a powerful training method.
Why This Matters for You
Here’s what this shift means for you as a member at CrossFit Shrewsbury:
- More Variety – You’ll see new workout formats, longer challenges, and fresh combinations to keep training exciting.
- More Fun – These sessions are high-energy, full of team spirit, and guaranteed to lift your mood (yes, even in January).
- More Progress – By cycling through phases of strength, skill, and conditioning, we keep your progress moving forward instead of stalling.
Think of it like seasons in nature. Each block of training builds on the last, so you’re always growing stronger, fitter, and more capable—without burning out or getting stuck in a rut.
The Takeaway
So, if you’ve been asking yourself, “Why do the workouts feel different now at CrossFit Shrewsbury?”—that’s the reason.
We’ve moved from a block focused on strength and skills into a phase where conditioning takes centre stage. But strength isn’t disappearing. Instead, we’re layering new fitness on top of the foundation you’ve already built.

Over the next few months, expect more reps, more sweat, more high-fives, and more smiles than ever.
At CrossFit Shropshire in Shrewsbury, we’ll keep the balance between strength, skill, and conditioning so that you don’t just get fit for a season—you stay fit for life.
So, keep it simple. Keep showing up. And then go work out. 💪
