How to Stick to a Fitness Routine (Even When Life Gets Hectic)
You get into a groove… and then life throws a curveball.
One of the kids gets sick.
Work drops a surprise deadline on your desk.
Something breaks at home.
And just like that, two weeks have flown by and your trainers haven’t left the hallway.
At CrossFit Shropshire, we see this all the time. And it’s not because people don’t care or aren’t motivated. It’s because life is messy, and motivation alone isn’t enough.
So instead of relying on willpower, let’s talk about how to build a system that actually works.
Why Your Routine Keeps Falling Apart
Before we can fix things, we need to understand why routines often break down:
1. You’ve set the bar too high
Trying to train 5 days a week, eat clean, stretch, meditate, and sleep 8 hours? Sounds amazing — but it’s a setup for overwhelm. Start smaller. Win early.
2. You don’t have a plan B
If your routine only works when everything else is perfect, it won’t last. You need quick alternatives for busy or chaotic days.
3. You’re doing it alone
No support = easy to fall off. Accountability makes a massive difference — whether it’s a coach, a classmate, or a friend checking in.
A 3-Step System That Actually Works
Here’s the same strategy we teach busy mums, firefighters, and students here at CrossFit Shropshire:
Step 1: Anchor Your Sessions
Pick 2 or 3 non-negotiable sessions each week.
Write them in your diary.
Tell someone.
Treat them like appointments you can’t miss.
This helps build rhythm, even in busy weeks.
Step 2: Have a Plan B
If life knocks your routine sideways, don’t quit — *adapt*.
Can’t get to class? Do a short home workout.
Try some Gorilla Stretches while the kettle boils.
Go for a 10-minute walk.
Movement doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to happen.
Step 3: Don’t Break the Chain
Get a calendar or whiteboard.
Tick off every day you do something active — even a small thing.
This visual streak is powerful. You’ll find yourself doing that workout just to keep the chain alive.
A Real Member’s Story: Amy’s Consistency Wins

Amy is one of our early morning legends.
Rain or shine, she turns up, tired, busy, or buzzing, it doesn’t matter.
And just recently, she crushed a barbell workout that used to stop her in her tracks.
That win wasn’t about hype or motivation. It was about consistency.
She just kept showing up.
And you can do the same.
