What if the secret to getting stronger and leaner starts with putting one foot in front of the other?
In a world obsessed with high-intensity workouts, extreme challenges, and flashy fitness trends, walking seems… too simple. Too slow. Too boring.
But here’s the twist: walking might be the secret weapon you’ve been ignoring.
At CrossFit Shropshire, we love heavy barbells and sweaty metcons. But we’re also big fans of the fundamentals, and walking is one of the most powerful, underrated fitness tools available to you right now.
And it’s free.
This summer, we’re putting more emphasis on outdoor walks and adventures. It’s more than a nice way to spend a weekend—it’s a strategic move to improve your overall health, recovery, and performance in the gym.
Let’s break down why walking is a game-changer.

5 Reasons Walking Should Be Part of Your Fitness Plan
1. It Boosts Recovery
Walking increases blood flow, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. That means less soreness and faster recovery after workouts. It’s the perfect “active recovery” that doesn’t drain your energy reserves.
2. It Reduces Stress (And That Means Less Belly Fat)
Cortisol—the stress hormone—is linked to fat storage, especially around the midsection. Walking in nature, especially, has been shown to lower cortisol levels and calm the nervous system. This isn’t woo-woo; it’s real science. A walk outside could help more than another HIIT class.
3. It Improves Fat Burning
Your body burns a higher percentage of fat for energy during low-intensity activity like walking. Combine it with strength training, and you create the ideal conditions for muscle retention and fat loss.
4. It Supports Mental Health and Creativity
Feeling stuck? Go for a walk. Countless thinkers—from Steve Jobs to Charles Darwin—used walking as a way to solve problems and spark ideas. You’ll come back clearer, calmer, and ready to take on whatever’s next.
5. It Builds the Foundation for Athleticism
Walking strengthens your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and spine. It builds your aerobic engine. It teaches your body to move with rhythm and coordination. If you can walk well, you can train well.
Alex’s Story: How I Learned to Love Walking
I used to treat walking like something you only did if you couldn’t train. If I wasn’t lifting, running, or doing burpees, I felt like I wasn’t doing anything.
Then I hit a phase where I was constantly tired. I wasn’t sleeping well. Training felt harder than it should have. I needed a reset.
That’s when I started walking every day. Short walks, 30 minutes max, just to get outside and move. Within two weeks, my energy was up, my joints felt better, and my gym performance actually improved.
Now? I use walking as a key part of my own fitness plan, and I recommend it to everyone who trains at CrossFit Shropshire.
